Telangana Opposition Leader Warns Against Power Utility Privatisation

Telangana's opposition Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) has raised concerns over reported moves to dilute stakes in state-owned power utilities, claiming the Congress government intends to privatise key energy sector companies.

BRS leader Harish Rao criticised the electricity rate increases, arguing that consumers require relief during the festive season rather than facing additional financial burdens. He contended that the government's actions contradict the interests of common citizens who depend on affordable power supply.

The opposition party has alleged that the government's privatisation strategy targets TG-Transco, TG-Genco, and the Singareni mining corporation alongside state distribution companies (Discoms). According to the BRS, the reported 26% dilution in TG-Transco represents a significant step toward transferring public assets to private control.

The allegations come amid broader debates in India over the privatisation of public utilities, with states grappling with balancing financial sustainability of power sectors against affordability concerns for consumers. The issue remains contentious in Telangana's political landscape as the government faces scrutiny over its energy policy decisions.
