Telangana plans fodder cultivation on lake beds to combat El Niño shortages

Telangana is preparing a contingency strategy to address potential fodder shortages expected during the El Niño weather phenomenon by converting shallow beds of lakes and ponds into temporary cultivation zones. Authorities plan to utilise shikam lands—seasonal shallow water bodies that dry up during certain periods—for growing livestock feed crops, ensuring adequate supplies for the state's farming communities.

The move reflects growing concerns about feed availability as El Niño conditions typically bring irregular rainfall patterns and prolonged dry spells across South Asia. By capitalising on existing water infrastructure during optimal cultivation windows, the state government hopes to bridge the gap between fodder demand and supply during critical periods.

The initiative forms part of Telangana's broader drought management strategy, which combines traditional water bodies with modern agricultural practices. Officials are coordinating with district-level agricultural departments to identify suitable water bodies and prepare them for fodder crop cultivation, including grasses and legumes suitable for ruminant livestock.

The scheme targets smallholder farmers and pastoral communities who are particularly vulnerable to feed shortages during adverse weather cycles. By leveraging existing natural resources, the state aims to reduce fodder price volatility and support livestock productivity during El Niño-induced climatic stress.
