Authorities in Hyderabad are investigating a suspected exploitation scheme involving 43 women who donated oocytes for minimal compensation while operators allegedly profited substantially. The case has raised concerns about consent verification and the role of fertility clinics in the operation.

Police in Telangana have launched an investigation into an alleged oocyte procurement racket that authorities say exploited dozens of women in Hyderabad. According to preliminary findings, 43 women were recruited to donate eggs, with each recipient receiving approximately ₹20,000 per cycle. Investigators allege that intermediaries and operators netted around ₹3 lakh per cycle, suggesting substantial profit margins at the expense of the donors.
The probe has identified several concerning irregularities in the operation's conduct. Authorities are examining allegations of forged consent documents and unauthorized commission arrangements, as well as investigating the recruitment networks used to identify potential donors. The investigation is also scrutinizing the possible involvement and culpability of IVF and fertility centres operating in the city in facilitating these transactions.
The case underscores broader concerns about regulatory oversight in India's assisted reproductive technology sector. Women who donate oocytes face medical risks including ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome and infection, yet compensation standards remain largely unregulated across many states. Investigators are tracing payment trails and the financial mechanisms used to distribute funds among operators, recruiters, and fertility centres.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the names of clinics or individuals allegedly involved. The investigation comes as medical regulatory bodies and women's rights advocates increasingly call for stricter enforcement of existing guidelines governing egg donation practices and enhanced protections for donors against exploitation.
