Telangana's BRS alleges conspiracy in Godavari-Cauvery river link project

The proposed Godavari-Cauvery link project has become a flashpoint in interstate water politics, with Telangana's ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) contending that Andhra Pradesh is leveraging the scheme to compromise the state's hydroelectric and irrigation interests. Party leaders argue that the project, in its current form, threatens Telangana's established water allocation rights and development priorities.

BRS Working President Harish Rao characterized the initiative as part of a broader pattern of encroachment on Telangana's autonomy. Rao asserted that Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu is using the river-linking project as a vehicle to contest Telangana's water entitlements, reiterating longstanding tensions between the two states since Telangana's formation in 2014.

The inter-state river linking initiative, which has been under discussion in various forms, proposes to connect surplus water from the Godavari basin to the Cauvery river system. Water-sharing disputes have remained a persistent source of friction between the neighboring states, with both states asserting claims over shared river systems. Telangana has previously objected to similar proposals, citing concerns over resource allocation and agricultural sustainability.

The controversy underscores broader tensions in India's water management policy, where competing claims from different states over shared river resources frequently trigger political disputes. Officials from both states have yet to issue formal statements responding to the BRS allegations regarding the project's current status or proposed timeline.
