Telangana steps up drought contingency measures ahead of El Niño impact
Telangana's Rural Development and Rural Water Supply ministry has rolled out a comprehensive action plan to ensure uninterrupted water supply to rural communities during the anticipated El Niño-induced dry spell. The measures include accelerating borewell recharge infrastructure and protecting existing water systems from damage.

The Telangana government has directed all district administrations to expedite the completion of borewell recharge structures as part of its contingency planning for potential water scarcity linked to El Niño weather patterns. The Rural Development and Rural Water Supply ministry has issued specific directives to ensure rural areas remain resilient to anticipated climatic disruptions.
Key among the measures is the acceleration of groundwater recharge infrastructure projects across districts. Officials have been instructed to prioritize completing pending borewell recharge structures to enhance water availability during potential drought conditions. The initiative aims to build adequate buffering capacity within rural water supply systems before the El Niño impact intensifies.
Additionally, the state has emphasized the protection of existing water supply networks. Authorities have been directed to implement strict protocols to prevent damage to water pipelines during ongoing road construction and maintenance activities. This precautionary measure is designed to minimize disruptions to water distribution systems that could prove critical during water-scarce periods.
The ministry has also mandated awareness programmes in rural communities focused on promoting short-duration crop varieties. These initiatives seek to help farmers adapt cultivation practices to potential water availability constraints, reducing pressure on groundwater resources and supporting agricultural sustainability during challenging weather conditions.
The multi-pronged approach reflects Telangana's proactive strategy to mitigate the impact of anticipated climatic challenges on rural livelihoods and essential services.
