Telangana to clear police vacancies, add 5,000 officers by 2028

Telangana's Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy announced an ambitious plan to bolster the state's law enforcement capacity, pledging to eliminate all vacant positions in the police department and bring on 5,000 new officers by 2028. The initiative reflects the government's focus on strengthening public safety infrastructure across the state.

As part of the same announcement, the state government increased the ex-gratia payment for Home Guards who are killed while performing their duties from the existing amount to ₹10 lakh. The enhanced compensation underscores the government's commitment to supporting the families of security personnel who make the ultimate sacrifice in service.

Director General of Police emphasized the need for law enforcement agencies to prioritize emerging criminal threats and adopt modern policing practices. The DGP highlighted the evolving nature of crime in urban and rural areas, stressing the importance of equipping police personnel with contemporary training and technological tools to effectively tackle contemporary security challenges.

The recruitment drive and vacancy-filling exercise are expected to address long-standing gaps in police staffing levels, which have historically impacted response times and crime prevention capabilities across Telangana. Officials indicated that the expanded workforce would enable better coverage in both urban centers and rural regions of the state.
