Pitru Paksha is a significant observance in the Hindu calendar when families perform rituals and offerings, known as shradh, to honour deceased relatives. The fortnight is believed to be a time when ancestors are spiritually closer to the living, making it important to observe prescribed customs and prohibitions.
According to Hindu scriptural traditions, devotees are advised to refrain from ten key activities during this period. These include avoiding auspicious ceremonies such as marriages, engagements, and housewarming rituals. Beginning new ventures, purchasing major items, and conducting business transactions are also discouraged during Pitru Paksha. Additionally, practices like haircuts, shaving, and body treatments are typically postponed.
Social celebrations and entertainment activities are similarly restricted during this fortnight. Many households abstain from playing music, attending parties, or consuming non-vegetarian food during Pitru Paksha. Sexual relations between spouses are also traditionally avoided during this period as a mark of respect to ancestors.
Religious scholars emphasize that these guidelines aim to create a spiritually conducive environment for performing ancestral rites. The observance of these restrictions is believed to honour the departed and ensure their peace in the afterlife. While practices may vary across regions and communities, the underlying principle remains consistent: dedicating this period solemnly to ancestral remembrance and performing appropriate rituals with focus and devotion.
