Tens of millions of children face online sexual abuse annually

Child protection agencies have highlighted the alarming prevalence of online sexual abuse affecting youth worldwide, with tens of millions of children experiencing exploitation through digital platforms annually. The findings underscore growing concerns about the safety of minors in internet spaces, where predatory behaviour ranges from exposure to explicit material to coercion and non-consensual sharing of intimate images.

According to the report, more than 20 per cent of children aged 12 to 17 have been exposed to unwanted sexual content, pressured into sexual interactions, or had intimate images shared without their consent. The statistics paint a troubling picture of the risks young people face as digital connectivity becomes increasingly central to their social lives.

The research indicates that online sexual abuse transcends geographic boundaries, affecting children across diverse regions and socioeconomic backgrounds. Experts warn that the problem is likely underreported, as many young victims remain silent due to shame, fear of parental reaction, or lack of awareness about available support mechanisms.

Child protection advocates are calling for strengthened safeguards online, improved digital literacy programmes, and better coordination between technology companies, law enforcement, and child welfare agencies. The findings are expected to prompt policymakers across the region to re-examine existing frameworks for protecting minors in digital environments and to invest in preventive education initiatives.
