Terengganu logs fourth leatherback turtle nesting in month

A leatherback turtle was observed nesting at Pantai Jambu Bongkok in Marang early this month, extending a remarkable surge in turtle activity along Terengganu's coastline. The sighting represents the fourth confirmed landing of the endangered species within a single month, according to local wildlife authorities.

The latest nesting event added significantly to conservation efforts in the state, with the turtle depositing eggs that contribute to the month's overall tally of 265 protected eggs. Leatherback turtles, listed as vulnerable globally and protected under Malaysian law, undertake long migratory journeys to reach nesting beaches.

The Terengganu coastline, particularly beaches in Marang and Dungun districts, has long served as a critical nesting ground for leatherback populations. The recent cluster of landings suggests favorable conditions and possibly enhanced monitoring efforts by conservation teams working to safeguard nesting females and their eggs from human interference and natural predators.

Wildlife officials typically cordon off nesting areas and monitor turtle activity throughout incubation periods. The species' return to Malaysian shores in notable numbers underscores the importance of ongoing coastal protection initiatives and international cooperation in marine conservation.
