Tesla and other Chinese automakers are conducting a major recall of more than 4 million vehicles over safety defects, primarily involving door handle mechanisms, China's State Administration for Market Regulation announced on Friday. The US electric vehicle manufacturer is recalling approximately 2.98 million China-manufactured and imported vehicles as part of the broader action. The recall represents the largest automotive recall in China this year, according to local media reports.
The safety concern centres on door handle failures that, in extreme circumstances, could leave occupants unable to exit vehicles. Chinese authorities have identified a specific risk scenario involving the malfunction of electronic door mechanisms, prompting urgent action across the industry.
The recall follows increased regulatory scrutiny of flush-mounted, or hidden, door handles commonly featured on Tesla vehicles and numerous Chinese electric vehicle models. In February, Chinese authorities signalled plans to ban such hidden door handle designs beginning next year, citing safety risks highlighted by multiple incidents where electronic doors failed to function properly.
China has intensified oversight of EV safety features in recent months following accidents both domestically and internationally where concealed electronic door systems malfunctioned, trapping passengers inside vehicles. The regulatory action reflects growing concerns about emerging technologies in electric vehicles and their potential safety implications for consumers.
