Tesla to halt Cybertruck production in 2027 for robotaxi push

Tesla plans to wind down Cybertruck production at its Giga Texas factory by the middle of 2027, marking a significant shift in the electric vehicle manufacturer's product strategy. The move will clear manufacturing capacity for the company's next major initiative: the Cybercab robotaxi, which Musk has positioned as a cornerstone of Tesla's autonomous vehicle ambitions.

The decision reflects Tesla's strategic pivot toward self-driving technology and represents a relatively short production window for the angular truck, which began deliveries in late 2023. The Cybertruck has generated considerable interest since its unveiling, though production has ramped up gradually as Tesla worked through manufacturing challenges inherent in the vehicle's unconventional stainless steel construction.

Musk has been vocal about his vision for autonomous vehicles as Tesla's future growth driver. The Cybercab project underscores this commitment, with the company betting that robotaxi services will eventually generate substantial revenue. By reallocating factory space from the Cybertruck to the Cybercab, Tesla is signalling its confidence in autonomous technology's commercial viability.

The timeline gives current Cybertruck customers and prospective buyers roughly three years to place orders before production concludes. It remains unclear whether Tesla intends to resume Cybertruck manufacturing at other facilities or pursue the model at reduced volumes elsewhere.
