Texas family preserves 86-year legacy by converting ranch into state park

The Pollard family, custodians of the Lake Palestine property since 1940, has transferred their substantial landholding to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation in a landmark conservation deal. The transaction, valued at over $10 million, will convert the ranch into a new state park, enhancing recreational opportunities for the broader public while protecting the site's natural and historical significance.

The 650-acre property encompasses diverse natural features and wildlife habitats that have been maintained throughout its ownership by the Pollard family. The sale represents a deliberate choice by the family to ensure their eight-decade stewardship of the land continues to benefit future generations through public ownership and management.

Following completion of the purchase in 2027, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department plans an extensive development programme for the site. Officials have outlined plans to establish guided nature tours, camping facilities, and hiking trails across the property, transforming it into a comprehensive recreational destination for state residents and visitors.

The acquisition underscores growing efforts across Texas to expand state park infrastructure and preserve ecologically significant landscapes. By converting private holdings into public parks, authorities aim to balance conservation goals with increased access to natural resources for communities across the state.
