Engineers in Texas conducted an innovative experiment in 1997 by integrating recycled roofing shingles into two test sections of Highway 31, each spanning approximately 1,000 feet. The initiative emerged as state transportation officials sought novel approaches to reduce construction waste while maintaining road quality standards.
Extensive monitoring of the test sections revealed that asphalt surfaces incorporating recycled shingles performed comparably to conventional highway materials, withstanding substantial traffic loads without significant degradation. The findings validated the technical feasibility of the recycling approach and demonstrated that discarded construction materials could be effectively repurposed for infrastructure development.
