Texas has found an innovative solution to coastal degradation by repurposing discarded oyster shells through the 'Sink Your Shucks' programme. The initiative collected more than 650,000 pounds of shells from local businesses and community sources, converting what would otherwise become waste into material for environmental restoration.
Working together, community volunteers constructed new oyster reefs across 4.5 acres of St. Charles Bay using the collected shells. Oyster reefs serve as critical ecosystems that support marine biodiversity, improve water quality, and provide protection against coastal erosion and storm surge.
