Chiang Mai International Airport will experience substantial flight disruptions from November 21-28 as airlines coordinate with festival organizers to ensure safe airspace during Yi Peng, northern Thailand's renowned lantern festival. A total of 108 flights have been cancelled during the period, while a further 80 services have been rescheduled to minimize conflicts with the massive lantern release.
The Yi Peng festival, which falls during Thailand's Loy Krathong celebration, sees hundreds of thousands of paper lanterns released skyward in a traditional display marking the end of the Buddhist lunar year. Officials estimate more than 200,000 lanterns will be launched during the festival week, creating significant airspace management challenges for the region's primary airport.
The flight cancellations and rescheduling represent a coordinated effort between Thai aviation authorities and festival organizers to balance cultural traditions with aviation safety requirements. Chiang Mai International Airport serves as a crucial hub for both domestic and international travelers, making the festival-period adjustments a substantial logistical undertaking.
Airlines have advised passengers affected by the schedule changes to contact their carriers directly for rebooking options. The festival attracts tens of thousands of visitors annually, and airport officials are preparing for elevated passenger volumes throughout the disruption period despite the reduced flight schedule.
