Thai badminton player becomes first doping case at Asian Games

Pitchamon Opatniputh, a teenage badminton competitor representing Thailand, faces suspension following a positive test result for furosemide, a banned diuretic substance. The positive sample represents the inaugural doping violation detected at the ongoing Asian Games.

Furosemide is classified as a prohibited substance by the World Anti-Doping Agency and is commonly used as a water-loss agent. Athletes have historically attempted to use such diuretics both to mask the presence of other banned substances and to achieve rapid weight loss in weight-category sports.

The provisional suspension of the 19-year-old player comes as sporting authorities maintain strict anti-doping protocols across the Games. Opatniputh will have the opportunity to respond to the allegation and request further analysis of the test sample through established appeal procedures.
