Industry stakeholders have thrown their weight behind the government's revenue-raising initiative, viewing the fee increase as a reasonable measure to fund tourism infrastructure and preservation efforts. The 450-baht levy represents a significant jump from current charges and is intended to enhance destination management across popular tourist zones.
However, tourism operators have drawn a firm line on the insurance component, arguing that mandatory coverage would deter visitors and complicate entry procedures. Association representatives contend that travelers should retain the freedom to arrange their own insurance arrangements, warning that bundled policies could disadvantage both operators and tourists through inflexible pricing structures.
The fee proposal arrives as Thailand seeks to balance revenue generation with competitiveness in a recovering tourism market. Officials have positioned the charges as essential for maintaining service quality and managing visitor impacts on natural and cultural sites.
Industry groups are expected to continue negotiations with government agencies to finalize fee implementation details while seeking assurances that insurance provisions will remain optional for international arrivals.
