Thailand is welcoming stepped-up diplomatic efforts by the United States towards Myanmar, according to Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow, who indicated the issue will feature prominently in regional discussions this month. Speaking in Lisbon on Friday, Mr Sihasak said ASEAN member states should use their November summit in the Philippine capital to chart a path forward for Myanmar, which has been suspended from the 10-nation bloc since the military's seizure of power in February 2021.
The Thai minister's comments reflect growing momentum around Myanmar's political crisis, with major powers intensifying their involvement in efforts to address the situation. US engagement with Myanmar represents a potential diplomatic opening that Bangkok believes could help unlock broader ASEAN discussions on the country's reintegration and future trajectory.
Myanmar's suspension has remained a contentious issue within ASEAN, with member states divided over how to handle the military junta and demands for democratic restoration. The November summit in Manila presents a critical opportunity for the bloc to reassess its approach and potentially coordinate a unified strategy.
Thailand's backing of US involvement suggests growing recognition among ASEAN members that international pressure and engagement may be necessary to advance the Myanmar situation, rather than the bloc's previous "constructive engagement" approach that has yielded limited results in recent years.
