Thailand's Immigration Bureau has extended its automatic passport control system to nationals from 33 countries, allowing eligible travelers to process through border checkpoints more rapidly at major airports. The automated gates, which use biometric technology to verify traveler identities, have been operational at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports as well as other international terminals.
The participating nations include several countries from Asia, Europe, and other regions, reflecting Thailand's efforts to facilitate smoother travel experiences for frequent international visitors. The system reduces processing times by eliminating the need for manual document inspection at immigration counters, particularly benefiting business travelers and tourists during peak arrival periods.
Thailand's immigration authorities have emphasized that the automated system maintains strict security protocols while improving operational efficiency. Travelers from eligible countries must meet specific criteria, including possession of a valid passport and the absence of security flags in immigration databases, to utilize the automated gates.
The expansion of automatic passport control demonstrates Thailand's commitment to modernizing border management infrastructure as the nation continues to attract international arrivals. Officials have indicated that the list of participating countries may be adjusted based on bilateral agreements and security assessments.
