Thailand green-lights $9.2 billion flood control initiative

The Thai government has greenlit an ambitious flood control scheme as part of broader efforts to mitigate the country's vulnerability to seasonal flooding and climate-related water management challenges. The comprehensive programme encompasses multiple infrastructure projects across the flood-prone central and eastern regions.

The centrepiece of the initiative is the Chai Nat-Pa Sak-Gulf of Thailand flood drainage canal system, the largest component of the package valued at approximately 165 billion Thai baht. The project aims to create an integrated waterway network capable of redirecting excess floodwaters from vulnerable agricultural and urban areas toward the Gulf of Thailand during peak monsoon seasons.

The flood control initiative reflects Thailand's growing recognition of climate vulnerability and the need for large-scale infrastructure adaptation. Central Thailand, particularly the Bangkok metropolitan area and surrounding provinces, has experienced severe flooding in recent years, causing significant economic disruption and affecting millions of residents.

The approval comes as Thailand simultaneously pursues complementary strategies to enhance national resilience, including expanding strategic reserves of rice and crude palm oil in anticipation of El Nino weather patterns, and advancing technological initiatives such as semiconductor manufacturing localisation under the "Chip Made in Thailand" policy.
