Thailand's Immigration Bureau has rolled out the Thai Immigration (THIM) mobile app as part of a broader digitalization effort to enhance the arrival experience for international travelers. The application aims to reduce processing time at immigration counters to just 40 seconds per visitor, significantly cutting wait times that have traditionally posed challenges during peak travel periods.
The THIM app allows foreign visitors to complete preliminary immigration documentation and procedures through their smartphones prior to arrival or upon entry, eliminating the need for manual form completion at physical checkpoints. By digitizing key processes, the system seeks to create a more efficient border management operation while maintaining security and compliance standards.
The initiative comes as Thailand intensifies efforts to boost its tourism sector, which remains a vital economic driver for the country. The Immigration Bureau has set an ambitious target of welcoming 33 million foreign visitors annually by 2026, up from previous visitor numbers. Streamlining border procedures is seen as a critical component of improving Thailand's competitiveness as a tourist destination in the region.
The app represents part of Thailand's wider push toward digital government services and modernized infrastructure. Officials believe that faster, more convenient immigration procedures will enhance the overall visitor experience and encourage repeat visits and longer stays, ultimately contributing to increased tourism revenue across the country.
