Thailand must carefully evaluate small modular reactor technology before adoption
Experts say Thailand should conduct thorough assessments of small modular reactors (SMRs) before considering deployment as part of its energy strategy. Key considerations include economic viability, regulatory frameworks, and technical feasibility for the Southeast Asian nation.

Small modular reactors have emerged as a potential energy solution globally, but Thailand would be wise to undertake comprehensive evaluation before committing to the technology, according to policy analysts. SMRs, which generate smaller amounts of electricity than conventional nuclear plants, are being promoted as flexible alternatives that could diversify energy portfolios and support decarbonization goals.
Thailand's initial assessment phase should prioritize several critical factors. Economic analysis must establish whether SMR construction and operation costs align with alternative energy sources available to the country. Regulatory and legal frameworks would need substantial development to govern licensing, safety standards, waste management, and decommissioning procedures—areas where Thailand currently lacks established nuclear infrastructure.
Technical considerations are equally important. Thailand would need to evaluate site selection criteria, water availability requirements, grid integration capabilities, and workforce training needs. The country's existing energy demand patterns and projected future requirements should guide whether SMR deployment represents an optimal investment compared to renewable energy expansion or other alternatives.
International experience with SMR technology remains limited, as most projects globally remain in development or early construction phases. Thailand should study lessons from early-adopter nations while assessing whether the technology's promised flexibility and scalability advantages would materially benefit the regional energy system. A methodical, evidence-based approach would position Thailand to make informed decisions about nuclear energy's role in its long-term energy security strategy.
