Thailand's Board of Investment has given the green light to Toyota's 1.49 billion baht project to develop hydrogen-powered Hilux vehicles, underscoring the nation's commitment to emerging automotive technologies.
The BOI approval represents a significant step in Toyota's strategy to commercialize hydrogen fuel cell vehicles in Southeast Asia. The Hilux, one of the region's most popular pickup trucks, will be adapted to run on hydrogen technology, offering a zero-emission alternative to conventional diesel and petrol engines.
The investment reflects Thailand's broader efforts to position itself as a manufacturing center for alternative fuel vehicles. By supporting such initiatives, the BOI aims to attract cutting-edge automotive technology development while supporting the country's environmental sustainability goals.
Toyota's hydrogen Hilux project is expected to contribute to Thailand's industrial diversification and create technical expertise in fuel cell technology. The initiative also aligns with regional trends toward decarbonization in the transportation sector, potentially opening new markets for Thai-manufactured vehicles across Southeast Asia.
The project's development timeline and production targets are expected to be determined through further collaboration between Toyota and Thai authorities.
