Thailand Tourism Authority Eyes UNESCO Sites, 55 Communities for 2027 Growth

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has unveiled an ambitious tourism development initiative that capitalizes on the country's UNESCO World Heritage sites alongside emerging community-based destinations. The strategy targets more than 55 communities across Thailand, positioning them as alternative attractions for international and domestic visitors in the lead-up to 2027.

By integrating UNESCO-recognized properties with grassroots tourism enterprises, TAT seeks to create a more geographically dispersed tourism ecosystem. This approach aims to reduce overtourism pressures on popular destinations while generating economic benefits for rural and provincial communities through sustainable travel initiatives.

The initiative represents a shift toward experiential and culturally immersive tourism offerings. Communities selected for development will receive support in infrastructure, hospitality training, and marketing to meet international visitor standards while maintaining authentic local character.

TAT's coordinated network approach with UNESCO partners is designed to enhance Thailand's competitive positioning in regional tourism markets. The 2027 timeline aligns with broader national development goals and provides communities sufficient preparation to establish quality tourism services and facilities.
