Thailand has appealed to ASEAN member states to adopt a more proactive stance in confronting the region's escalating challenges, ranging from great-power competition and economic fragmentation to environmental degradation and resource scarcity. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow emphasized that individual nations lack the capacity to effectively manage these complex, overlapping crises independently.
According to Thai diplomatic statements, strengthened regional cooperation represents a strategic necessity for ASEAN's stability and prosperity. Coordinated action among member states would enable the bloc not only to respond effectively to immediate crises but also to preserve its economic growth trajectory amid global uncertainties.
Thailand's call reflects broader concerns within ASEAN about the region's vulnerability to external pressures and internal fragmentation. The statement comes amid intensifying discussions within ASEAN forums on climate adaptation, energy transitions, and food system resilience—issues that require coordinated policy responses.
The appeal underscores Thailand's position that ASEAN's traditional principle of collective action remains essential for protecting Southeast Asian interests in an increasingly volatile geopolitical environment.
