Tharoor condemns 'war-like' Delhi security measures as excessive

Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor launched a scathing critique of security measures being implemented across Delhi, characterizing the government's response as disproportionate and contrary to democratic values. Speaking after his return to the national capital early Saturday, Tharoor described witnessing a "war-like deployment" that he said has few historical parallels in the city.

The opposition politician detailed the extent of restrictions now in place, citing checkpoints positioned every few hundred metres, concrete barriers and spike strips across roadways, and a deployment of 22,000 police and paramilitary personnel throughout the metropolis. He also noted the cancellation of 250 trains, closure of 45 metro stations, and reports of individuals being detained from homes and streets in and around Delhi.

Calling the measures an "undeclared Emer-GenZ," Tharoor argued that young Indians deserve better than such restrictions. He contended that the government should facilitate expression rather than resort to repression, and provide answers to citizen concerns rather than employ force. The Congress leader particularly criticized the internet suspension in central Delhi, describing it as "most regressive."

According to Tharoor's statement, these measures have been deployed ostensibly to prevent peaceful public questioning regarding electoral integrity. The restrictions represent an escalation in government response to dissent and mark a significant limitation on movement and communication in India's capital city.
