Theaterisation must align with India's security imperatives: IAF chief

The Indian Air Force's top commander has underscored the importance of calibrating the defence forces' theaterisation strategy to reflect the country's unique security environment and strategic requirements. Speaking on the ongoing restructuring of military command and operations, the Air Chief Marshal highlighted that any reorganisation of the armed forces must account for India's geographical position, threat landscape, and operational capabilities.

Looking ahead to emerging security challenges, the IAF chief noted that future conflicts are expected to be fundamentally multi-domain in character, involving simultaneous operations across air, land, sea, cyber, and space domains. This evolving nature of warfare necessitates a departure from the traditional service-centric approach to military planning and operations.

To effectively counter such complex threats, the three services—Army, Navy, and Air Force—will need to operate with significantly greater integration than historically seen. The Air Chief Marshal stressed the imperative for enhanced jointness, with the services planning operations in tandem and sharing real-time intelligence and capabilities to present a unified response to security challenges.

The remarks come as India continues to refine its military structure and command mechanisms to enhance operational effectiveness. Defence analysts note that increased tri-service coordination could strengthen India's ability to respond swiftly to emerging security threats while optimizing resource allocation across the armed forces.
