Theatre troupe questioned over 2018 production amid sedition allegations

Law enforcement officials have questioned a group of theatre performers in connection with a 2018 theatrical production that police claimed contained material perceived as mocking Malaysia's national social contract, the Rukun Negara.

The actors were brought in for investigation as part of a sedition probe into the nature and content of the theatrical work. According to police statements, the production was alleged to have included elements disrespectful to the foundational principles enshrined in the Rukun Negara.

Following their detention and questioning, all suspects involved in the case were released on bail pending further investigation. Police have not disclosed additional details regarding the specific nature of the theatrical content under scrutiny or the identity of those detained.

The Rukun Negara, established in 1970, comprises five fundamental pillars: belief in God, loyalty to the King and nation, upholding the supremacy of the Constitution, rule of law, and good behaviour and morality. It remains a cornerstone of Malaysia's national ideology.
