Third-generation zookeeper continues family legacy at River Wonders

The zookeeping profession runs deep in the Kaunder family. Rutraajni's grandfather joined Singapore Zoo when it first opened its gates in 1973, establishing a connection to the wildlife park that has endured through the generations. Her father extended that legacy two decades later, taking up a role at Night Safari when it launched in 1994.

Now Rutraajni has stepped into her own position within Singapore's zoological family, working at River Wonders, which showcases freshwater and wetland ecosystems. In her role as a zookeeper, she is responsible for the care and wellbeing of more than 200 animals across the facility.

The succession underscores the deep institutional knowledge and passion for animal care that characterises the family's involvement in Singapore's world-renowned wildlife parks. With over five decades of combined family service, the Kaunders exemplify the dedicated personnel behind the scenes who ensure the daily welfare of the animals in Singapore's care.

Rutraajni's career choice reflects both a personal commitment to animal stewardship and a continuation of values instilled through her family's long-standing relationship with Singapore's zoological institutions.
