KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 20 — Malaysia's air quality declined sharply Friday as 30 areas nationwide registered unhealthy Air Pollutant Index (API) readings by 9am, signalling a significant deterioration in environmental conditions across the nation.
Batu Muda in Kuala Lumpur and Johan Setia in Selangor recorded the highest pollution levels, emerging as the most severely affected zones. The unhealthy readings indicate API levels exceeding safe thresholds, with implications for public health, particularly affecting vulnerable populations including children, elderly residents, and those with respiratory conditions.
The widespread pollution alerts prompted heightened monitoring by environmental authorities. Residents in affected areas were advised to limit outdoor activities and consider using air purification equipment indoors. Schools and workplaces in severely impacted zones faced potential operational adjustments pending air quality improvements.
Haze episodes in Malaysia typically correlate with regional transboundary pollution, though contributing factors can include local emissions. Authorities continued tracking atmospheric conditions and issuing updated advisories as the situation developed throughout the day.
