Thiruvananthapuram to undertake major cable infrastructure overhaul project

Thiruvananthapuram Corporation has announced a comprehensive initiative to remove what officials describe as unscientific overhead cable installations across the city. The project represents a significant effort to modernize the municipality's infrastructure and address longstanding concerns about the proliferation of tangled and poorly maintained utility lines that crisscross residential and commercial areas.

The cable removal scheme will eventually encompass all 101 wards administered by the corporation. To ensure systematic progress, authorities have identified five wards for the first phase of implementation: Palayam, Fort, Kannammoola, Thycaud, and Perunthanni. The phased approach will allow officials to assess outcomes and refine methodology before citywide rollout.

The initiative aims to address aesthetic, safety, and operational concerns associated with existing cable infrastructure. Poorly organized overhead lines have frequently been linked to power disruptions, safety hazards, and maintenance challenges across Indian cities. Officials expect the removal project will improve urban aesthetics while reducing risks associated with aging and improperly installed cables.

The corporation has not yet disclosed specific timelines or budget allocations for the project. Further details regarding contractor selection, displacement protocols for affected stakeholders, and coordination with utility providers are anticipated in coming weeks as the municipal body formalizes implementation procedures.
