Thousand Japanese volunteers help move historic Hirosaki Castle keep

Hirosaki Castle's iconic keep was shifted closer to its original location through a remarkable feat of collective effort in Japan's Aomori Prefecture. The 400-tonne wooden structure, which dates back to the early 17th century, was transported on a specially designed cart that the volunteers helped move using ropes.

Participants in the relocation project were selected through a public lottery system and organised into coordinated groups to manage the pulling effort. The structured approach ensured safe and controlled movement of one of Japan's most significant historical landmarks.

The repositioning is part of a larger restoration initiative aimed at returning the castle keep to its original site. Such preservation projects are critical for maintaining Japan's cultural heritage, particularly for structures that have survived centuries of natural disasters and urban development.

Hirosaki Castle, originally constructed in 1611, is renowned as one of Japan's finest examples of castle architecture. The community involvement in this preservation effort reflects broader public commitment to safeguarding the nation's historical sites for future generations.
