Large crowds assembled at Talacauvery in Kodagu district to participate in the Cauvery Theerthodbhava celebration, one of the most significant religious observances in South India. The occasion marks the emergence of water from the spring at Talacauvery, considered the source of the Cauvery River, which holds deep spiritual importance for millions across southern states.
The gathering drew devotees from Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and other parts of the region who undertook pilgrimages to witness the natural phenomenon. Talacauvery, nestled in the Western Ghats at an elevation of over 1,200 metres, is believed to be the origin point of the river that sustains agriculture and livelihoods across the Deccan plateau and Tamil Nadu.
The Theerthodbhava ceremony typically occurs during the autumn months when groundwater levels replenish following monsoon rains, causing the spring to overflow. This natural occurrence is regarded as a divine manifestation by devotees, who gather to offer prayers and perform rituals at the sacred site.
Local authorities coordinated arrangements to manage the influx of pilgrims, ensuring safety and facilitating religious ceremonies throughout the day. The celebration underscores the deep cultural and spiritual connection between communities across southern India and the Cauvery River, which has sustained civilizations for centuries.
