CALAPAN CITY — Three suspects were arrested in Palawan after authorities discovered they were transporting fish allegedly caught using explosives, marking another enforcement action against illegal fishing methods in the region.
Personnel from the Philippine National Police Maritime Group's 2nd unit intercepted a vehicle at a checkpoint in Brooke's Point along the National Highway in Barangay Maasin on Wednesday. The vehicle was found carrying 47 boxes of assorted fish, which authorities suspected were obtained through the use of explosive devices—a destructive and illegal fishing practice prohibited under Philippine environmental laws.
The three individuals apprehended during the operation are currently under police custody pending further investigation and processing of charges related to illegal fishing and environmental violations. The fish and vehicle were also seized as evidence.
Explosive fishing, also known as blast fishing, is widely banned throughout Southeast Asia due to its devastating impact on marine ecosystems and fish populations. The practice destroys coral reefs and marine habitats, threatening long-term fish stocks and the livelihoods of legitimate fishermen.
