Three prominent leaders of the Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP) were taken into preventive custody at Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi after their flight landed on Wednesday. Abhijeet Dipke, Saurav Das, and Ashutosh Ranka were apprehended as they disembarked, according to law enforcement officials.
Authorities said the preventive arrest was ordered ahead of a planned protest demonstration scheduled to take place at Jantar Mantar, a popular venue for public demonstrations in central Delhi. The three men are expected to be presented before an executive magistrate for further proceedings.
Preventive detention is typically employed by Indian authorities to forestall potential law and order disturbances. The exact charges or allegations against the CJP leaders were not immediately disclosed.
The incident comes as civil society organisations continue to mobilise public opinion on various social and political issues through demonstrations in the national capital. The CJP has previously organised protests at Jantar Mantar on matters concerning public interest and governance.
