Three districts face heightened landslide risk, NBRI warns residents

The National Building Research Institute (NBRI) has activated landslide warnings across three districts in the Western and Central regions, citing elevated risk conditions. The alert covers Colombo, Kalutara and Kegalle and remains in effect until 10:00 a.m. on 16 December.

Residents in these districts have been advised to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to safeguard lives and property. The warnings typically follow periods of heavy rainfall or unfavourable weather patterns that increase the likelihood of slope failures and earth movements.

The NBRI monitors geological and meteorological conditions across the country to assess landslide vulnerability. Such alerts are issued to enable local authorities and communities to implement preventive measures and prepare emergency response protocols.

Dustricts receiving landslide warnings are generally advised to avoid non-essential travel in hilly and mountainous terrain, monitor drainage systems in at-risk areas, and ensure evacuation routes remain accessible. Authorities urge the public to report any signs of ground instability or slope deterioration to relevant officials immediately.
