Three Indians held captive in Ethiopia; family receives Rs 1 crore ransom demand

Three Indian nationals have been abducted in Ethiopia while attempting to reach the United States through illegal migration channels, according to reports reaching family members in India. The relatives have reportedly received ransom demands totalling Rs 1 crore for the safe return of the captives.

The incident underscores the escalating security risks faced by migrants undertaking perilous journeys through the so-called "dunki" routes, which typically transit through multiple countries including Ethiopia, Sudan, and the Arabian Peninsula before reaching their final destinations. Such routes are often controlled by human trafficking networks that exploit vulnerable migrants.

Ethiopia has emerged as a critical transit point on illegal migration corridors to Europe and North America, with thousands of Indians attempting the journey annually. The East African nation has witnessed a surge in kidnappings and extortion of migrants in recent years, with criminal syndicates targeting those perceived to have access to financial resources.

The Indian government has repeatedly cautioned citizens against attempting unauthorized migration through such routes, warning of the heightened risks of trafficking, exploitation, and loss of life.
