Three nations accounted for over two-thirds of India's August oil imports

India's crude oil import basket in August became heavily concentrated among three major suppliers, marking a significant shift in the country's energy sourcing landscape. Russia maintained its position as the leading supplier despite a notable decline from July's historic peak, while the United States and the United Arab Emirates emerged as increasingly important sources of Indian petroleum demand.

Russia's share in India's August oil imports contracted to 44 per cent from the exceptionally high levels recorded in the preceding month. The pullback reflects adjustments in global supply chains and trading dynamics, though Moscow retained nearly half of India's import share. Simultaneously, both the U.S. and UAE increased their respective shipments to India, capitalizing on market opportunities.

The combined contribution of the three countries reached an all-time high in August, underscoring India's growing reliance on a narrow base of suppliers. This concentration represents a departure from India's traditional diversification strategy in oil sourcing, potentially exposing the economy to supply chain vulnerabilities. The surge in American and Emirati exports to India reflects broader geopolitical and commercial factors reshaping global crude markets.

India, the world's third-largest oil consumer, continues to navigate volatile international energy markets while managing its import costs and supply security. The August figures suggest shifting trade patterns that may reflect both deliberate policy adjustments and market-driven developments in global petroleum distribution.
