TUGUEGARAO CITY, CAGAYAN — Three specimens of Platymantis frogs that may constitute species previously unknown to science were among at least 15 amphibian and reptile species documented during a recent biological survey in Apayao province, environment officials reported.

The discoveries were made during a scientific expedition conducted from August 13 to 19 in the forests of Calanasan, Apayao, by researchers from the University of Santo Tomas-Herpetological Research Collection. The survey focused on amphibians and reptiles, groups of animals considered key indicators of ecosystem health.

The three unidentified Platymantis specimens represent a significant find, as the genus comprises small, ground-dwelling frogs endemic to the Philippines. The presence of potentially new species highlights the importance of the Calanasan forests as a biodiversity hotspot and underscores the need for continued scientific study and conservation efforts in the region.

The broader findings of 15 documented amphibian and reptile species demonstrate the ecological richness of Apayao's forest ecosystems. Environment officials have not yet released detailed findings or formal species descriptions pending further analysis of the specimens collected during the survey.
