Three-quarters of Gen Z Indians prioritise work-life balance over leadership roles

Three-quarters of Generation Z Indians prioritise work-life balance over traditional leadership titles, according to a comprehensive survey released by global education firm Emeritus. The finding underscores a significant departure from conventional career aspirations, with at least 65 per cent of respondents believing professional success does not necessitate climbing the executive ladder.

The "India's Gen Z Outlook 2026: Recalculating Education, Ambition, and Success" report surveyed over 1,000 respondents aged 15-28 across three life stages—pre-college, transitioning, and early career—in India's major metropolitan centres. The research highlights how young Indians are reassessing traditional education and career pathways amid multiple economic headwinds, including visa uncertainties, escalating costs of overseas education, and the disruptive rise of artificial intelligence.

Analysts point to formative experiences shaping this generational mindset. Young Indians have witnessed widespread corporate layoffs unfold across social media and experienced firsthand how immigration policies can derail carefully laid plans. These realities have prompted a rational reassessment of the conventional career ladder as a reliable pathway to success.

The generational shift reflects broader changes in how young professionals define achievement, moving away from hierarchical advancement toward models emphasising flexibility, personal development, and sustainability. For employers and educational institutions, the findings suggest a need to adapt recruitment and career development strategies to align with evolving workforce priorities.
