Three sectors poised to drive India's next ₹100-lakh-crore capex wave
Artificial intelligence infrastructure, renewable energy transition, and domestic defence manufacturing are converging to unlock a major capital expenditure cycle across India's economy. These three manufacturing-intensive sectors are expected to collectively drive substantial investment growth in coming years.

India's capital expenditure landscape is being reshaped by three concurrent investment themes that economists and industry analysts say could catalyse a multi-trillion rupee spending cycle. The convergence of AI infrastructure development, renewable energy deployment, and defence indigenisation is creating unprecedented demand for manufacturing capacity and industrial investment across the country.
The artificial intelligence infrastructure buildout represents a new frontier for India's technology sector, requiring significant investment in data centres, computing facilities, and supporting infrastructure. This sits alongside an accelerating renewable energy transition, where India has committed to substantial capacity additions in solar, wind, and grid modernisation to meet climate targets and energy security goals.
Simultaneously, India's push towards defence indigenisation is driving capex in aerospace, defence manufacturing, and related supply chains. The government's focus on reducing import dependence while developing domestic capabilities has opened new investment opportunities across the sector.
Together, these three sectors create a virtuous cycle of manufacturing demand, employment generation, and infrastructure development. The manufacturing-intensive nature of all three investment themes suggests the capex cycle could generate broad-based economic activity beyond the sectors directly involved, with potential multiplier effects across related industries and regional economies.
