Three soldiers serving with South Korea's military were injured during a patrol operation in the demilitarised zone separating North and South Korea, according to defence officials.
The blast occurred while the servicemen were conducting routine operations in the heavily fortified buffer zone that has divided the peninsula since the 1953 armistice. All three personnel were evacuated for medical treatment following the incident.
The origin of the explosion remains under investigation. Preliminary reports have not confirmed whether the blast resulted from a mine or another cause. The demilitarised zone, one of the world's most fortified borders, has been the site of periodic incidents despite decades of relative military calm.
South Korean defence authorities said they are conducting a full assessment of the circumstances surrounding the explosion. The incident underscores the ongoing security challenges along the 248-kilometre border between the two nations.
