The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) alleged Wednesday that three tankers were damaged after striking mines in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most critical shipping lanes. The incidents resulted in fires aboard the vessels, though the IRGC did not provide specifics on the extent of damage or casualties.
In a separate incident, the IRGC claimed to have safely recovered what it described as an American reconnaissance drone in the same area. The military force did not release details about the alleged aircraft or the circumstances of its capture.
Following the reported incidents, the IRGC attributed responsibility for any resulting marine pollution to ship owners and crews. The Iranian military issued a warning that it would respond decisively to what it characterized as "provocative actions" in the region.
The Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly one-third of the world's seaborne oil passes, has been a flashpoint for regional tensions. Mine incidents and drone operations in the waterway have previously drawn international concern and responses from multiple naval powers operating in the Persian Gulf.
