Thunderstorms expected in coastal AP towns as rain deficit persists

Andhra Pradesh faces a sharp rainfall deficit as the monsoon season winds down, with the India Meteorological Department reporting 59 per cent less precipitation than normal between October 1 and 20. The shortfall comes during a critical period for agricultural activities across the state, raising concerns among farming communities already facing weather-related challenges.

The IMD has issued weather alerts for southern coastal districts, predicting thunderstorms in Nellore and Tirupati on October 21. These isolated weather systems are expected to bring temporary relief to the region, though they may not substantially offset the month-long deficit. Prior to this development, the meteorological office has also forecast heavy rainfall across certain parts of Andhra Pradesh on October 2.

The prolonged dry spell has implications for groundwater recharge and reservoir levels across the state. Agricultural experts have flagged concerns about delayed sowing for winter crops and potential water stress on standing crops. The state government has been monitoring the situation closely as farmers prepare for the upcoming cultivation season.

Weather forecasters suggest residents in affected areas remain alert for thunderstorm warnings, as localized heavy downpours could lead to water accumulation in low-lying areas. The forecast underscores the region's ongoing struggle with erratic monsoon patterns, a trend increasingly linked to broader climate variability.
