The Terrorism Investigation Division (TID) has taken into custody a former LTTE cadre following his extradition from India, where he had faced legal proceedings on suspicion of attempting to reconstitute the banned militant organization.
According to security officials, Indian authorities arrested the individual in 2015 after identifying him as a potential threat to national security. He subsequently underwent trial in the Indian court system on charges related to alleged efforts to revive LTTE operations.
Following the conclusion of legal proceedings across the border, Indian authorities transferred the suspect to Sri Lankan custody, enabling local investigators to conduct further inquiries. The TID has initiated a comprehensive investigation to establish whether the suspect engaged in activities designed to reorganise or revive the proscribed Tamil militant movement within Sri Lankan territory.
The LTTE, which waged a nearly three-decade armed conflict in Sri Lanka, has remained banned since its military defeat in 2009. Authorities continue to maintain vigilance against individuals suspected of attempting to resurrect the organisation or coordinate clandestine operations.
