TikTok settles $400 million US privacy violation case involving children

The video-sharing platform will pay $300 million immediately, with an additional $100 million due following the vacation of a prior consent decree tied to its predecessor company, Musical.ly, according to a DOJ statement issued Friday.

The settlement concludes a 2024 lawsuit that alleged TikTok contravened the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act and the Federal Trade Commission Act. US Associate Attorney General Stanley E. Woodward Jr. characterized the resolution as protecting minors in digital spaces, stating that the settlement "secures a substantial recovery while reinforcing the protections that families expect and deserve."

The case underscores mounting regulatory scrutiny of TikTok's operations in the United States, where concerns about data privacy and child safety have intensified. The platform, which has a substantial user base among younger demographics, has faced repeated challenges from American authorities over its handling of personal information.

Since the DOJ's legal action commenced in 2024, TikTok has implemented structural changes to its US operations, including modifications to its ownership arrangements through agreements with major investors announced in January. These modifications reflect the platform's efforts to address regulatory concerns while maintaining its presence in one of its largest markets.
