Tirupati initiates value chain improvement scheme for Totapuri mangoes

Tirupati has rolled out a focused development programme targeting its prized Totapuri mango variety, one of the region's signature agricultural products. The project encompasses multiple interventions across the supply chain, from orchard management through to market linkages, with the objective of increasing farmer incomes and reducing post-harvest losses.

The scheme addresses critical gaps in the existing value chain infrastructure, including cold storage facilities, standardised processing units, and quality assurance mechanisms. Officials indicate the initiative will facilitate better aggregation of produce and enable smallholder farmers to access premium markets more effectively.

Tirupati's Totapuri mangoes have long enjoyed recognition for their distinctive flavour and export appeal, particularly in international markets. However, inefficiencies in handling, storage, and distribution have historically constrained returns to cultivators. The new project seeks to remedy these constraints through coordinated investment in supply-side improvements.

The administration has engaged agricultural departments and horticultural bodies to oversee implementation, with an emphasis on farmer participation and cooperative structures. Enhanced value realisation is expected to incentivise continued cultivation and attract younger generations to mango farming in the district.
