The Tiruvannamalai Municipal Corporation has introduced a targeted waste management programme by installing custom-built collection bins designed specifically for polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles throughout the town. The new receptacles are part of a broader effort to enhance segregation at the source and facilitate higher recycling rates in the southern Tamil Nadu municipality.
PET bottles, widely used for beverages and packaged goods, represent a significant portion of municipal solid waste. By creating dedicated collection points, the corporation aims to prevent these recyclable materials from entering landfills and instead channel them to recycling facilities where they can be processed into new products.
The initiative reflects growing recognition among urban local bodies in the region regarding the environmental impact of plastic waste. Municipal officials stated that the strategically positioned bins would encourage residents and businesses to participate actively in waste segregation efforts, a key component of India's Swachh Bharat Mission and broader sustainability goals.
The corporation has also indicated plans to coordinate with recycling units and waste management partners to ensure collected PET bottles are processed efficiently. Officials urged residents to utilise the designated bins to support the municipality's waste management objectives and contribute to cleaner urban spaces.
