Tiruvannamalai restricts hill access during Karthigai Deepam festival

The District Collector of Tiruvannamalai has imposed restrictions on devotees ascending the sacred Arunachala Hills during the Karthigai Deepam festival, citing safety concerns related to anticipated heavy rainfall in the region. The prohibition is intended to prevent accidents and ensure the wellbeing of pilgrims who traditionally undertake the challenging trek during the annual celebrations.

Karthigai Deepam, one of the most significant festivals in Tiruvannamalai, draws thousands of devotees to the region each year. The festival culminates in Maha Deepam, when a massive lamp is lit atop the Arunachala Hills, attracting pilgrims from across India and beyond. The hill climb is an important ritual for many worshippers who believe the ascent holds spiritual significance.

Meteorological forecasts indicate substantial rainfall is expected during the festival period, creating hazardous conditions for those attempting the steep and rocky terrain. The restrictions are designed to mitigate risks such as slippery pathways, flash flooding, and reduced visibility that could endanger devotees navigating the hills during inclement weather.

Authorities have advised pilgrims to participate in alternative celebrations and rituals that can be conducted safely at lower elevations and designated festival grounds in the town. The Collector's office is expected to provide further updates on contingency arrangements for the festival celebrations.
