Tiruvannamalai temple elephant christened 'Namasivayam' in naming ceremony

The elephant at the Arunachaleswarar temple in Tiruvannamalai has been officially named 'Namasivayam' during a formal naming ceremony held at the ancient shrine. The event was attended by state ministers, Collector Vandhana Garg, and S. Bharanidharan, Joint Commissioner of the HR&CE (Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments) department for the Tiruvannamalai region.

The naming of temple elephants is a significant ritual in South Indian Hindu temples, where these animals play an important ceremonial role in daily worship and temple festivals. The name 'Namasivayam' carries religious significance, with 'Nama' referring to salutation and 'Sivayam' denoting Lord Shiva, to whom the Arunachaleswarar temple is dedicated.

The Arunachaleswarar temple, located at the base of the sacred Arunachala hill, is one of Tamil Nadu's largest temples and attracts devotees from across India. Temple elephants are integral to the shrine's religious activities, participating in daily rituals and major festival processions, particularly during the annual Girivalam celebration when circumambulation of the holy hill occurs.

The presence of district and HR&CE officials at the naming ceremony underscores the administrative oversight of temple operations and the welfare standards maintained for animals in religious institutions across Tamil Nadu.
